FileManager 5.2
FileManager is a tool that can benefit both new computer users
and experts alike.
FileManager allows you to display all files in any
subdirectory, on any disk drive, copy files, delete files,
print files, move files, edit files (in either ASCII or
hexadecimal mode), and a whole lot more!
You can customize FileManager to remember how to find your
favorite word processor, spreadsheet, etc. When you want to
edit a file, simply highlight that file and, with the touch of
a key, load that file into your word processor and start
editing.
If you want to see what's inside a file (even program or
hidden files), you can browse through it (no matter what kind
of file it is or how big it is!). You can even change the
file byte by byte, in ASCII, decimal or hexadecimal mode.
Part or all of the file can be printed in either ASCII or
hexadecimal.
Single or groups of files can be printed with a wide variety
of options.
Any other program or batch file can be executed directly from
FileManager (provided you have sufficient RAM), allowing you
to use FileManager as a "shell" so that you don't have to
become a DOS expert right away.
FileManager was originally developed to help me do all of my
DOS-related tasks. Since then, it has been revised
extensively because of user feedback. If you have any ideas
that you feel would make FileManager a better product for
everyone, please let us know!
FileManager 5.2
FileManager is designed primarily as a utility for hard disk
based-machines but will also work for floppy-based systems.
It has been tested on PC's, AT's and 386's with monochrome,
CGA, EGA and VGA monitors. It should run on any true, MS-DOS
compatible computer.
FileManager is distributed with the following files:
README.FM -- This file
FM52.EXE -- A self-extracting archive file that
contains the following programs:
FM.EXE -- The actual FileManager executable file
FM.OVR -- FileManager executable program overlay
file
FMINSTAL.EXE -- Install program to select colors, word
processor programs, archive programs &
change printer drivers
FM_KEYS.EXE -- Install program to select keystrokes
used in FileManager's editor
CONVDOC.EXE -- Converts FM.DOC to plain ASCII for
printers that can not print the
extended character set
FM.DAT -- Standard input file for color monitors
FM_BLUE.DAT -- Alternate input file for color
monitors
FM_MONO.DAT -- Input file for monochrome monitors
FM.PRT -- Default printer driver (HP LaserJet Series II)
EPSNFX80.PRT -- Epson FX-80 Printer Driver
HPLJ.PRT -- Hewlett Packard LaserJet Series II
Printer Driver
To extract all of the above files, simply type the following:
FM52 <Enter>
If you are using FileManager on a monochrome monitor, type the
following:
copy fm_mono.dat fm.dat <Enter>
FileManager 5.2
The files ending with .DAT can be edited using an ASCII text
processor (or FileManager's own built-in editor!). You can
select the colors to be used by FileManager by changing the
first number on any of the first 18 lines. Or you can change
any of the colors using FileManager's install program
(FMINSTAL.EXE). This program shows you the changes to the
colors as you are making them.
To benefit from all of FileManager's capabilities, you need a
minimum of 350K of free RAM on your computer. (You can use
FileManager with less RAM, but certain functions will be
disabled.)
The only files you actually NEED to run FileManager are the
following:
FM.EXE -- The actual FileManager executable file
FM.OVR -- FileManager executable program overlay
file
FM.DAT -- Standard input file for color monitors
FM.PRT -- Default printer driver (HP LaserJet Series II)
